Summer Time Fun Activities

  • Take some of your childs small plastic figurines or toys (ie. Plastic bugs, animal figures, Little Tikes Figures etc) and put them in small plastic containers (ie. Magerine or yogurt containers, tupperware containers etc.), fill containers with water and freeze.  Remove frozen items from the containers.  The frozen items can be placed in water so they can melt away quickly or in a large empty container such as your childs wading pool or a large storage bucket  Your child will have hours of fun ice play.

  • Get an ice cube tray fill it with water and different colours of food colouring.  Once frozen place ice in a large bucket of water.  As the ice melts the colours will mix.

  • Get paint brushes, sponges, cloths etc and fill many buckets with water.  Your child will love painting furniture, fences, sidewalks and more....but the great part is there will be no damage.

  • Sand Box Volcanoes:  going to the beach or even better if you have a sandbox in your back yard make a sand castle with your child, put a well in the top and sprinkle in some baking soda, add some vinegar and TADAAA you have an instant volcanoe.

Activities & Toys

If you have a hot glue gun this toy will take less than 5 minutes to make.

What you need is:

  • A gardening glove or plain wool glove

  • A package of plastic farm animals

  • A hot glue gun

You can make an instant puppet for your child by gluing on 5 farm animals to the finger tips of a glove.  If you use a small stretchy wool glove your older child can wear the glove puppet as well.

(WARNING:  it may require hours of singing Old MacDonald had a Farm)

Try gluing other items on gloves as well, cloth flowers, plastic frogs etc.

Due to size of farm figures please use glove puppet under adult supervision.

Bottle Shakers

What you need:

  • Clear plastic bottle (i.e. water bottle)

  • Beads, rice, sparkles, water, sand, beans, buttons etc.

  • Duct Tape (many stores have duct tape that comes in a variety of colours)

  • Hot Glue Gun

  • Imagination - This is a fun and quick project to make for your child and one that will involve many hours of enjoyment.  I recommend making more than one bottle and making the contents in each one different.

Here’s what you do:

Choose any item/s that you and your child would like such as sand and sea shells, plastic spiders, water and buttons, water with large sparkles, coloured rice, bells etc. and place them into a clear bottle.  Cover the lid with coloured duct tape (if there is liquid in the bottle I recommend using a hot glue gun along with the duct tape) and then let the fun begin!

This is also a great project to make with your older child.  A variety of musical instruments could be made using rice, bells, beans, rocks, buttons, sand and more. (I’m sure that any preschooler would be full of great ideas.)
